We highly recommend this tour with Native Choice Tours. It was much cheaper than booking through the ship and the quality of the tour was exceptional. It was a wonderful small group and the site was not crowded. We arrived back at the pier with lots of time to spare before the ship was to depart. Diego was very good at watching the time but we did not feel rushed at all. On the drive back, Native Choice provided us with a sandwich and snacks which really hit the spot. One of our group had been to Chacchoben and said that Kohunlich was so much better as Chacchoben has become very commercial. As we walked through the site, Thatcho would appear with ice cold bottles of water at just the right time. At the ruins, he took us around to various buldings and explained the significance to us and answered any questions. He gave us a lot of information about Mexico and the Mayans on the drive to the ruins. Thatcho, (probably not the correct spelling), was a very good driver. The van was air conditioned and very comfortable. It is about a 2 hour drive to the Kohunlich ruins but well worth it. The office was only a short walk from the pier and the driver and tour guide were ready to go as soon as we arrived. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. We took the tour of the Kohunlich ruins with Native Choice Tours. But seeing Mayan ruins somewhere on this route was a bucket list item. The port of Costa Maya was beautiful and you wished we had more time to explore it. On the drive back, we stopped at a roadside fruit stand and bought fresh pineapple, mango and pineapple bread, each serving was about a dollar. The visit to the ruins was nice, but our particular guide seemed more knowledgeable about vegetation and ancient medicine than the ruins themself. This took pretty much the entire (very short) port time in Costa maya. It was even safe by american standards! What a delightful change in pace! It was about an hour drive to the ruins. After being in Belize the day before, feeling like we were risking our lives with a driver on Belizean roads, the driver from "Native Choice," comparatively, drove like a careful old Grandpa who just got a brand new Buick and he wasn't about to let it get a scratch or bump. Our group of five joined about 10 other people in a brand-new, very clean 15 passenger van. It was a little confusing to find, but there were lots of helpful people around the port who pointed us in the right direction. We walked from the port to the meeting site, which was probably about a mile. We took the Mayan ruins Tour on December 26th, coming off the Carnival Breeze.
